One of the Butterfly series, B. Purple Emperor is a compact cultivar good for small gardens or containers, producing a profusion of mauve-purple flowers.

 History

Buddleja ‘Pyrkeep’ (selling name PURPLE EMPEROR) is a cultivar raised by Elizabeth Keep in her garden after her retirement from East Malling Research Station in 1983. Elizabeth’s main objective was to breed shorter cultivars with a range of colours.

Elizabeth produced a series of cultivars which were all named after British butterflies.

• Eventual height: 100-120cm (3-4ft) Spread: 100-150cm (3-5ft)
• Hardiness: Very hardy - 20°C USDA zones 5-9
• Leaf colour: Narrow pale green
• Flowering: Very floriferous. The flowers are 15-20cm (6-8") in length
• Fragrance: Scented
• Situation: Prefers a sunny position
• Wildlife: Good for bees and butterflies
